We have some outstanding speakers this year: Karla Estrada, Denise Goulet and Eric Treuil.

Promotional Media

Karla Estrada was born in Nicaragua, but her family immigrated to the U.S under political asylum when she was a young girl. She graduated from Sacramento State University with a degree in psychology and worked as an assistant clinical therapist for 5 years. Karla’s greatest passions are serving God, traveling around the world (she has done this), working with international students and hanging out with her very large “puppy” Keba. Karla now serves as a campus pastor at Sacramento State University.

denise_goulet

Denise Goulet travels around the world sharing what the Lord has done in her life: being delivered from living in fear, anger, and insecurity to walking in faith, love, and authority. Through her dynamic walk of transparency and vulnerability she connects with people and draws them to the Father. She and her husband, Paul, pastor the International Church of Las Vegas and she is the mother of three beautiful children.

eric_treuil

Eric Treuil is in great demand as a conference speaker because of his hilarious stories, practical insight, and skill at leading students to an encounter with God. He and his wife Annabelle have led the Chi Alpha ministry at the University of Louisiana - Lafayette for over 20 years and have seen the Lord build an incredible movement on the campus, so that it is now one of the strongest campus ministries in America. They have three awesome kids.

Worship will be led by the Chi Alpha at Stanford worship team. They love Jesus and they love helping people connect with Him in worship. They’re so excited they’re jumping for joy.

Retreat is coming up this weekend. Here are some logistical details to remember:

BRING
* A heart prepared for worship
* Food for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning
* Camera
* Bible
* Notebook and pen
* Sleeping bag (maybe - talk to your roomies) - check roommates at http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pR-gXJPcpTW7JYff-WevYSw
* Toiletries (there are several of you in each room, so don’t count on using the hotel’s shampoo).
* Warm clothes. The weather will be brisk but clear this weekend. See the latest forecast at http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/USCA0537
* Some dollar bills for tips to the hotel staff.

MAYBE BRING
* Fishing Gear
* Musical instruments - especially rhythmic instruments such as guitars, djembes, shakers and the like (we’re going to have a freeform drum circle/worship fest one night).

DO NOT BRING
* That stupid receipt that the registration software sent you. Unimportant.
* A bad attitude.

Your registration DOES NOT INCLUDE FOOD. Each suite comes with a full kitchen (microwave, stove, oven, refrigerator, pots & pans) and we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you make a CostCo (or equivalent) run before making the trek up to Konocti - the facility is awesome but it’s in the middle of nowhere. Buying your food there will be difficult.

Featured Speakers:

Curt HarlowCurt Harlow oversees college ministry throughout California, Nevada, and Arizona (he’s kind of like a bishop except he doesn’t get a cool collar). Both hilarious and insightful, Curt is known as one of the best speakers around. His messages are like ninjas—they stab you when you’re least expecting it. He blogs.

Sue HegleSue Hegle leads the Chi Alpha ministry at San Diego State University, where she started from scratch and has built a ministry of over 600 students that has endured for several decades. Along the way, she earned a Ph.D., got cancer, was kicked off campus and forced to meet in a nearby synagogue, led the Rabbi to Christ, and won a court case allowing her ministry to meet back on campus. She is guaranteed to thoroughly unsettle you.

Worship:

UCLA Chi Alpha worship teamWorship this year will be led by the UCLA Chi Alpha worship band. They rock. ‘Nuff said.

Recreation:

  • Hot tubbing: just sit in the tub and stare at the gorgeous lake…
  • Fireside relaxing: stretch out in front of your hearth and pretend that you don’t have classes breathing down your neck.
  • Our own crazy plans: Nothing is final yet - but we’ve got some serious fun in the works ranging from knitting to indoor games of stealth and assassination (we appeal to everyone).
  • Mini-golf: there’s a dinosaur-themed miniature golf course on site. it costs about three bucks to do this
  • Fishing: Last year we watched locals haul in astounding amounts of fish from the lake. At least one student plans to catch his own food at retreat. California fishing license required - available onsite.
  • Get buff: there’s a nice gym onsite that you can use compliments of the facility

Speaker: Sam Huddleston (pastor of Lighthouse Covenant Fellowship in Benicia, CA)

Photos: check out the photo gallery

Messages in Windows Media Format
Saturday Morning: Five Lessons from Daniel (part 1)
Saturday Evening: Five Lessons from Daniel (part 2)
Sunday Morning: Preparing Like David
Sunday Evening: We Need the Holy Spirit’s Power

Also, you might be interested to know that Sam has written a book about his story: you can learn more about Five Years to Life on Amazon.

P.S. I know I said that I’d post them in MP3, but the MP3 files were something like 15 times the size of the WMA files. I’m probably doing something stupid to cause this, but I don’t have time to hassle with it. If you’d like to convert the WMA files to reasonably-sized MP3s I’d be happy to upload them. Email chialpha at stanford dot edu if you convert them.
